EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern baseball team opened the 2001 season dropping the first game 4-1 but bounced back winning the final two 11-8 and 5-4.

February 9

In game one, senior Michael Nall got the start on the hill throwing 5.0 innings, giving up just one run while striking out seven. Junior Gabe Ribas came in relief with the score tied at 1-1. He threw the next four innings throwing just one bad pitch, which turned out to be a three-run home run giving UIC a 4-1 advantage. He struck out seven and walked none in his four innings of work.

Leading the way offensively was sophomore Eric Roeder who was 2 for 4 and a run scored. Sophomore Brandon Ackley and freshman David Gresky were the other 'Cats to record hits as the offense was held to four hits.

February 10

In game two, junior Zach Schara threw 5.2 innings giving up four runs, two earned, striking out six and walking two. Senior J.J. Standring entered the game allowing four runs, three earned, striking out three. In the ninth, junior Andy Adams threw the last two outs getting both outs by strikeout.

Offensively, NU scored four runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and five more in the eighth, adding an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Once again, Roeder led the hit parade going 3 for 6 with one RBI and two runs scored. Ackley went 2 for 4, driving in four while juniors Todd Morgan and Steve Haake had two hits apiece.

February 11

In game three, junior Ryan Bos got the nod on the hill, throwing 5.2 innings giving up three runs on four hits while striking out three. Freshman Dan Konecny finished the game giving up one run on two hits striking out five in 3.1 innings of work.

Offensively, Gresky went 3 for 4 with one RBI while seven other Wildcats each recorded a hit. NU scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth to win, 5-4.
