Freshman fencer Julia F?ldi has been tough competition in fall tournaments

F?ldi, Dunn Place In Fencing's Recent NAC Tournament

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Two representatives of the Northwestern women's fencing team placed in open competition at the Division I North American Cup in Palm Springs last weekend.

Freshman foilist Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istv?n Gimn?zium) finished 14th in a field of 64, while freshman Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Camp) was 38th of 57 competitors in the sabre division.

The tournament was open to all Division I fencers holding a "D" rating or higher from the United States Fencing Association. The USFA divisions are not related to the NCAA divisions of collegiate athletics.

Several Wildcat fencing alumni made their mark as well. All-American Vivian Imaizumi ('00) finished 14th in the women's sabre, while Carly Wells ('01) was tied for 41st. All-American Michelle Shaffner ('98) took 28th in the women's epee, just behind Janel Obenchain ('92) who was 26th.
