EVANSTON, Ill. - As shadows crossed Northwestern's Lakeside Field Saturday afternoon, signaling the close to the semifinal round of the 2001 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament, the No. 5 team in the country, Michigan, found itself on the losing end of a 3-0 decision to Big Ten regular-season co-champion Ohio State.
Ohio State, the second seed in this event, will play fouth-seeded Iowa at 1 p.m. Sunday on Lakeside Field in the Big Ten Tournament final. The winner of that game receives the conference's automatic bid into the 16-team NCAA Championship.
Buckeye goalkeeper Allison Blanton was the difference. She saved eight shots to thwart the Wolverines, who outshot Ohio State 15-8. The Buckeyes managed just three shots on goal in the game, but all three found the back of the Michigan goal.
All three OSU goals came in the first half. A penalty stroke got the Buckeye scoring started, as Vanessa Immordino put the ball in the back of the net at the 9:44 mark. Eleven minutes later, Jenee Doto took a pass from Immordino in front of the Michigan goal and rocketed it past Wolverine keeper Maureen Tasch.
In one of the most athletic plays of the day, Marije van Nouhuys closed out the scoring by dribbling around three Michigan defenders and firing a shot past a diving Tasch.
Michigan's offense was frustrated by the Buckeye defense throughout the game. So frustrated, in fact, a Michigan player received a red card near the end of regulation.
