EVANSTON, Ill. - Senior Tavaras Hardy (Joliet, Ill./Providence) and sophomore Jitim Young (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) had 14 points apiece, leading five players in double figures as the Northwestern men's basketball team defeated the International Select All-Stars, 84-64, in exhibition action Sunday afternoon.
Jason Burke (Plano, Texas/East) added 13 points and was a perfect 5-5 from the field, including three three-pointers. Winston Blake (Plano, Texas/Senior) had 12 points, while Aaron Jennings (Atkins, Iowa/Benton Community) added 10. Hardy and Burke also had seven rebounds apiece to lead the Wildcats.
"I was pleased with how hard we played," said head coach Bill Carmody. "I thought we rebounded well and came to play. They were a little thin in terms of bodies, but we also did some nice things today."
NU bolted out to an early 10-point lead, 18-8, before the International Select All-Stars went on a 7-0 run. However, the game was all Wildcats after that. Northwestern outscored its opponent, 25-5, over the rest of the half to take a 43-20 lead into the break.
The second half was more of the same, as the Wildcats' lead ballooned to 32 before the game was settled.
The International Select All-Stars were led by former Wisconsin standout Sean Mason, who had 19 points. Tony Graves, a former player at Southwest Missouri State, had 17 points.
The Northwestern men's basketball team will host another exhibition next Saturday, Nov. 10, meeting Lithuania-Alita at 4 p.m. in Welsh-Ryan Arena. That is a time change from the original schedule (7 p.m.) to accommodate Wildcat fans who want to take in the action following NU's football game with Iowa. Fans who show a ticket from the Iowa football game will be allowed into the exhibition for free.
