EVANSTON, Ill. - Iowa's field hockey team posted its second 3-2 overtime win in as many days Saturday, this time against top-seeded Michigan State to advance to Sunday's championship game of the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament at Northwestern University.
Iowa (13-4, 3-3) and Michigan State (15-5, 5-1) battled to double overtime before the game-winning goal was scored by Patie Gillern in the 98th minute. Gillern also had the game-winning overtime goal for the Hawkeyes in Friday's win over Penn State.
The Hawkeyes put the game's first points on the board, with a Sarah Dawson goal in the 31st minute, and then a shot by Maria Merluzzi four minutes into the second half.
Michigan State's Judith Van Haeringen had a chance to put the Spartans on the board with 13 minutes left in regulation, but her penalty stroke angled wide right. As time dwindled in regulation, however, MSU recovered and scored two goals in a span of eight minutes off shots by Annebet Beerman and Jessica Wheeler.
In the first overtime period, Michigan State missed five shots. At the other end, Gillern had a shot hit the post for Iowa.
In the second overtime, Michigan State was forced to play one person short after Van Haeringen received a yellow card. MSU still outshot the Hawkeyes, but Iowa's goalkeeper Barbara Weinberg and defender Tiffany Leister combined for three saves. Weinberg ended the game with 17 saves.
Over the course of the game, Michigan State failed to capitalize on 20 penalty corner opportunities.
The win was especially sweet for Iowa, which had fallen 2-1 in a regular-season game to the Big Ten co-champions on Oct. 26.
The Hawkeyes will face the winner of today's other semifinal, which pits Ohio State and Michgan.
Sunday's championship game will begin at 1 p.m. at Lakeside Field.
