Fencing Signs Local High School Standout

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern head fencing coach Laurie Schiller has announced the signing of Emily Pasternak to a National Letter of Intent.
Pasternak, a native of Wilmette, Ill. who fences sabre, is currently a senior at New Trier High School. This season she has taken first in every competition she has entered, including the Stevenson and Catholic Memorial Duals.
As a junior, Pasternak finished 11th in women's sabre at the Midwest High School Fencing Championships. She compiled a 43-29 record in her first three seasons of high school competition under coach Colby Vargas.
Competing in the Illinois Junior Championships at Northwestern on Nov. 18, Pasternak took first in the Under-20 Women's Sabre and qualified for the 2002 Junior Olympics. Earlier this year she took first in women's sabre at the Illinois Open.
Pasternak also finished second at the Illinois Junior Championships in 2000, and won the Under-17 division in 1999. At the Junior Olympics in 2001, she garnered a 17th-place finish in the Under-17 competition and placed 34th in Under-20.
An honor roll student, Pasternak also plays the cello in the symphony and chamber orchestras, and sings in the choir.
Pasternak is the daughter of Joseph Pasternak and Barbara Trommer. Both parents are physicians, and her mother is a 1983 graduate of Northwestern with a degree in medical education.
