Women's Basketball Downed by Florida International

MIAMI, Fla. - The Northwestern women's basketball team played in the first round of the Florida International Thanksgiving Tournament in Miami, Fla. and lost to tournament host, Florida International, 71-53. The Panthers pulled away in the second half to hand NU its third loss of the season.
Down 34-to-26 at the break, FIU outscored the Wildcats 37-27 in the second half. The Panthers stepped up the defense and used timely transition baskets to pull away, causing 14 second half turnovers in the process.
NU was led by junior center Leslie Dolland (Bloomington, Minn./The Blake School) who finished the game with 10 points and three rebounds. Classmate Nicole Daniels (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) who started her first game of the season, ended the day with eight points and five rebounds, three of them on the offensive glass.
The Wildcats leading scorer, Emily Butler (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) was held in check scoring just four points on 2-of-8 shooting. Butler did have four assists in the game.
NU played tough in the first half. Ahead by one, 26-25, with 3:44 left on the first-half clock, the Panthers went on a 9-0 run taking the momentum into halftime.
The second half started with three NU turnovers and just four points in the first five minutes compared to nine for the Panthers. The Wildcats played catch-up for the rest of the game.
NU is next in action when they take on Monmouth Saturday night at Golden Panther Arena. Tip time is set for 5 p.m.
