ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michigan (12-11, 8-8) snapped a three-match losing streak by defeating Northwestern (8-15, 4-12) in three games Saturday night (30-17, 30-20, 30-21).
The Wildcats' woes continue with their eighth consecutive loss. The Wolverines dominated the match, holding the 'Cats to a .055 hitting percentage. No NU player made more than 6 kills, though the team did outblock and outace U-M.
Freshman Jennifer Gandolph had a career-high night for Michigan, with 14 kills and 14 digs. Erin Moore and Carrie Ritchie each added nine kills.
In Game One the Wildcats found themselves down 22-8, but fought back with a 9-8 run to end the game. They scored the first points in Game Two, but Michigan soon regained the momentum.
Game Three started out with three quick service aces by Shannon Melka for U-M, and the Wolverines were able to put the game out of reach early to end the match.
The Wildcats return to Welsh-Ryan Arena for the final home matches of the season next weekend, taking on Minnesota and Iowa. Match times both nights are 7 p.m.
