EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's soccer team once again fell in the final minutes of a game. This time it was Western Illinois who scored a late goal, giving the Wildcats their sixth one goal loss of the season.
Western Illinois' Jason Schroeder broke through three defenders to score unassisted in the 88th minute. The goal broke a 1-1 tie that had held since the end of the first half, and gave the Leathernecks the 2-1 victory.
It was a rough beginning to the match for NU, as a misdirected clear by the defense bounced over Wildcat goalie Adam Grossman (Potomac, Md./Churchill), causing an own goal three minutes into the game. This was Grossman's first collegiate start.
However, a WIU penalty in the box with no time remaining in the first half gave NU the break it needed. Freshman Derek Schneider (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Marquette College Prep) drilled the penalty kick into the lower left corner of the Leatherneck goal, tying the match at 1-1.
For the next 45 minutes there would be a flurry of fouls and yellow cards, but no scoring until there was less than three minutes left in regulation. That is when Schroeder's shot found the back of the NU net, giving WIU its fourth straight win.
The 'Cats are off until next Sunday, when they host fourth-ranked Indiana at Lakeside Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
