University Park, Pa. - 19th-ranked Penn State proved to be too much for the visiting Wildcats, as the Northwestern men's soccer squad was blanked, 3-0, by the Nittany Lions Friday, at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa.
Brett Forbrich got the Nittany Lions on the board with a diving header from the top of the box, 31 minutes into the game. Less than 10 minutes later Ken Lear scored his fourth goal of the year, giving PSU a 2-0 advantage at the half.
The 'Cats held the score steady until Joe Zewe redirected a crossing pass into the NU net in the 86th minute.
NU only got 3 shots off in the match, compared to PSU's 28.
Freshman Wildcat goalie Ryan Pederson (Westerville,Ohio/Westerville North) made eight saves in the game, bringing his conference-high total to 62.
The 'Cats are next in action on Sunday when they return home to Lakeside Field as part of "Soccer Sunday" at Northwestern. The men are the second game of a doubleheader. The women kick off against Iowa at 1 p.m., and the men are scheduled to follow at 3:30 p.m. against intrastate opponent Western Illinois.
