EVANSTON, Ill. - Hosting one of the top fencing events in the Midwest, members of the Northwestern fencing team made a strong showing at the annual two-day Remenyik Open.
Freshman Julia Foldi (Budapest, Hungary) was impressive in Saturday's action, taking second of 52 competitors in women's foil. Assistant coach Ed Kaihatsu credited Foldi's success to a more aggressive approach in her bouts.
In women's sabre, Northwestern dominated the competition. Freshmen Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Camp) and Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne) finished second and third, just behind NU alum Carly Wells.
Junior All-American Kate Rudkin (Bolder, Colo./Boulder) tied for third in the women's epee, while senior Jennifer Greenebaum (Mendham, N.J./Pingry School) finished sixth in the field of 51.
On the men's side, Kaihatsu took fifth in the men's foil competition.
All NU fencers were not officially competing for the school. The first team competition of the season is next weekend, as they travel to the Ohio State Open in Columbus, Ohio.
