Evanston, Ill. - Northwestern women's swimming and diving gets underway this weekend as the Wildcats host Indiana on Saturday in a Big Ten dual meet and then team with the men for the annual NU Duals on Sunday.
The 'Cats return twenty letterwinners, including five All-Americans from last year's squad which finished fourth at Big Tens and 35th at NCAAs. The 'Cats will also benefit from the transfer of All-American Carmen Cosgrove (Perth, Western Australia), who swam for Nebraska last season. In all, there are 10 new faces on the team.
Three senior captains, Lauren Moore (Wilton, Conn./Wilton), Ashley Wagner (Taylor Mill, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and Whitney Winters (Abington, Pa./Abington Senior) lead the squad.
Indiana opened the season last weekend with a win over Evansville, 188-103. Last year, IU finished one spot ahead of NU at Big Tens, and Hoosier head coach Dorsey Tierney-NU head coach Jimmy Tierney's sister-was named Big Ten Coach of the Year. The Hoosiers also defeated the 'Cats last year in a dual meet in Bloomington, 168.5-131.5. This will be the third time the brother/sister combo has squared off against each other as head coaches. The record stands at 1-1.
Saturday's conference dual will begin at 1 p.m. at the Norris Aquatics Center on campus.
On Sunday, the men's and women's teams will host four other squads in the annual NU Relays. UW-Milwaukee and Illinois-Chicago will bring both their men's and women's squads, while Illinois and Indiana will feature only the women.
Competition on Sunday will begin at noon.
