STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Northwestern field hockey team dropped its third conference game of the season, losing 5-1 to Penn State at Bigler Stadium in Happy Valley.
The Lions jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Kiley Kulina scored the first of her three goals just 4:39 into the game and never looked back.
Penn State held NU to three first-half shots and no goals in taking a 3-0 lead into the intermission. After the break, PSU went right back to work, scoring just two minutes after the second-half whistle. Penn State would add another goal four minutes later.
NU senior Nicole Smith (Warnbro, Western Australia/Como Senior) got the Wildcats on the board with 11 minutes left in the game. Junior Lindsey Millard (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day) and sophomore Kirsten Mackey (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) earned assists as NU executed a textbook penalty corner. It was Smith's third goal of the season. Millards assist moved her into a tie for the team lead in assists with Suzi Sutton (York, Pa./Dallastown) at five.
The loss drops NU to 2-9 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Penn State improves to 7-6, 1-3 in the Big Ten.
The 'Cats are next in action Sunday, hosting Iowa at Lakeside Field in Evanston. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
