Evanston, Ill. - The Northwestern women's swimming and diving squad dropped a pair of dual meets to No. 5 Auburn (197-153) and Tennessee (191.5-158.5) Saturday, January 13 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Katie Simmons (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), Merritt Adams (Norcross, Ga./The Lovett School) and Rachel Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) led NU as all three took home first-place finishes. Simmons continued her unbeaten streak in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.45, and also finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.04). Adams swam a season-best 56.33 to take the 100 butterfly title, and Johnson completed the NU sweep of the butterfly events by posting 2:02.88 in the 200.
Even though the `Cats were on the losing end of both duals, multiple swimmers posted season best times at the meet, which head coach Jimmy Tierney feels is the most important statistic right now. "If they are racing really well and they are learning and making progress towards peak performances in February and March, that's what I look towards more than team scoring," he said.
The Wildcats will are next in action on Friday, January 19 at 6 p.m., when they take on intrastate rival Illinois at the Impe Pool in Champaign, Ill.
