EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern University men's soccer team fell to Drake, 3-2, Friday afternoon in action in Des Moines, Iowa. The Wildcats fell to 0-3 with the loss.
Drake wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Joe Sithonnorath stole a pass and buried it in the upper corner just 15 seconds into the match. Ian Herrick (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) tied it in the 39th minute with his first collegiate goal, finishing off a free kick by Paul Van Huysen (Portage, Mich./Monsignor Hackett) that was misplayed by Drake goalkeeper Zack Brennan.
Drake took the lead just before the half when Brian Duax scored unassisted, then built the lead up to 3-1 when Matt Bourne finished a combination play in the 51st minute. Northwestern cut the lead in half in the 77th minute when Grant Trimble (Olathe, Kan./North) finished off a cross from Michael Trudell (Wayzata, Minn./Orono). However, the Wildcats could not get the equalizer.
Chris Berlin (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) made eight saves in the Northwestern goal, while Brennan had five for Drake.
Northwestern is back in action Sunday, hosting Ohio State in its Big Ten conference opener. Kickoff at Lakeside Field is 2:30 p.m.
