EVANSTON, Ill. - Emily Gilley, a junior-to-be at Northwestern University, won the Illinois Women's Open golf championship. The event was held at the Mistwood Golf Course in Romeoville from July 27-29.

Gilley, a first-team All-Big Ten player who led the Wildcats to their first-ever NCAA Championship appearance this past spring, posted a three-round score of 1-over-par 217.

By sinking a 22-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole in the final round, Gilley defeated Wildcat teammate Elizabeth Burden. The two were tied entering the tournament's penultimate hole, but Gilley's birdie coupled with Burden's bogey allowed Gilley to win. Burden finished in a tie with Jennifer Broggi for second place at 3-over-par 219.

Another Wildcat, Christie Hermes, finished seventh overall with an 11-over-par 227.

The purse at the Illinois Women's Open -- which is open to professionals -- was $10,000, though as an amateur Gilley is not allowed to see any of the money.
