EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's tennis fell to second-seeded Minnesota, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Championships at the Indiana University Varsity Courts in Bloomington this afternoon.
The Wildcats earned the doubles point as Brad Erickson (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) and Joost Hol (Newport Beach, Calif./Foothill) defeated Thomas Haug and Martin Michalowski, 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Russell Bennett (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westlake) defeated Jorge Duenas and Harsh Mankad, 9-8(8) at No. 2.
Taking the lead into singles, NU could not garner a win as Minnesota won four of the six matches to eliminate the 'Cats. The matches at No. 1 and 4 were abandoned as Minnesota clinched the match with its four wins.
"We tried as hard as we could," said head coach Paul Torricelli. ?I think that our effort was fantastic and that are guys really wanted to win. The Gophers are a very difficult team to beat, they do not have a weakness in their lineup."
