EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team (16-4, 6-2) defeated the Minnesota Gophers, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. The Gophers drop to 14-4 on the season and 5-2 in the Big Ten.
The 'Cats jumped to an early lead, winning the doubles point as NU swpet the Gophers. Freshman Marine Piriou, who has missed the last two weeks because of mononucleosis, was back in the lineup today. Piriou teamed with Lia Jackson to win at No. 2 doubles, 8-4.
In singles action, the 'Cats won four of the six matches for the win. Katherine Nasser defeated Nora Sauska, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 for the win at No. 1. Shannon Duffy was the Wildcat victor at No. 2, defeating Sandra Olsen in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, to keep her undefeated streak in conference play alive. Jennifer Lutgert was a 7-6 (8), 6-4 victor over Minnesota's Jenny Howard at No. 6.
Jackson moved closer to setting a new school record in single-season wins, with her, 6-2, 6-1, victory over Minnesota's Michaela Havelkova at No. 4. Jackson is two wins shy of breaking the 31-win single-season record set by teammate Duffy in 1998.
Northwestern will be back in action on Sunday, April 16 when they play host to the Miami Hurricanes at 11 a.m. at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. In case of inclement weather, the match will be played at the Johnson Tennis Center.
