Women's Swimmers Fifth After Day One of NCAA Championships

EVANSTON, ILL. - The Northwestern women's swimming and diving team is in fifth place after the opening day of the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. Northwestern tallied 80 points on Day One, placing them behind defending champion Georgia (152), Arizona (121), Stanford (118) and California (103).
Northwestern's top performance came from senior sprinter Courtney Allen, who finished second in the 50-meter freestyle for the second consecutive year. Allen finished just .07 behind Georgia's Courtney Shealy, clocking a school-record 24.87 seconds. Dominique Diezi, meanwhile, fell just shy of qualifying for Thursday's evening session, tying for 17th in 25.63.
Other school records came from senior Amy Balcerzak in the 200 IM (2:13.64 for 12th overall) and the 400 medley relay -- featuring Allen, Balcerzak, junior Tashy Bohm and sophomore Merritt Adams -- as the Wildcats clocked 4:03.29 to finish fifth overall.
The 200 free relay team (Allen, Lauren Moore, Allyson Bowman, Diezi) finished fourth overall in a time of 1:41.12.
