Women's Basketball Closes With a Loss, 70-46

EVANSTON, Ill. - Despite 17 points from Tami Sears and 10 from Clarissa Flores, the Northwestern University women's basketball team fell to Michigan, 70-46, to close out the 1999-2000 regular season.
NU fell to 6-20 (3-13 Big Ten) heading into next weekend's Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis, while Michigan improved to 21-6 (13-3 Big Ten).
The Wolverines gained control of the contest early and never looked back, scoring eight of the first 10 points and quickly the lead to 13 at 19-6. After the teams traded baskets, NU made its best run of the day, scoring eight straight points to make the score 21-16. However, Michigan responded, scoring 10 straight to open up a 15-point advantage en route to a 33-20 halftime lead.
The Wolverines effectively ended the contest in the first minutes of the second half, scoring the first 10 points of the stanza to take a 43-20 lead.
Sears added eight rebounds to her 17 points, while Billee Russell had nine points to aid the Wildcats. For Michigan, LeeAnn Bies had 15 points and nine boards, while Stacey Thomas added 15 and Anne Thorius chipped in 10.
The Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament will begin Thursday afternoon at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and continue through the weekend.
