EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern University baseball team got another outstanding pitching performance -- the third in three games -- and ripped 16 hits to defeat Richmond, 12-2, at the Ralston Purina Baseball Challenge being hosted by the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.
The Wildcats won for the third straight game and improved to 3-3 overall, while the Spiders fell to 5-2.
Junior J.J. Standring dominated Richmond from the outset, allowing just five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out six. His outing was the third straight complete game by a Wildcat pitcher -- Gabe Ribas had a two-hit CG last week in Arizona, and Zach Schara struck out 16 in a complete-game win Friday night in Wilmington.
Offensively, freshman Eric Roeder led the attack with three hits and two runs. Four other 'Cats had a pair of hits. NU broke the game open early, scoring five times on five hits and a pair of Spider errors in the first inning and never looking back.
Northwestern will conclude play at the Ralston Purina Challenge Sunday morning, meeting the University of Connecticut at 10 a.m.
