EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern University women's tennis team earned its second upset win in two days at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, defeating No. 14 South Carolina, 5-2, in Madison.
The 18th-ranked Wildcats are now 7-1 on the spring campaign, while the Gamecocks fell to 5-3. Northwestern went 2-1 on the weekend in Madison.
NU got off to a good start by gaining the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. Colleen Cheng and Katherine Nasser were victorious at No. 1 (9-7), while Lia Jackson and Marine Piriou were winners at No. 2 (8-5).
In singles play, the 'Cats dropped the top two matches but won the other four to clinch the victory. Cheng was a straight-set winner at No. 3 and Piriou was a straight-set winner at No. 5. The key came with three-set wins by Lia Jackson at No. 4 and Jennifer Lutgert at No. 6.
