Women's Tennis Defeats Michigan, 5-2

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern University women's tennis team made all the right moves in the first step toward defending its Big Ten crown of a year ago, defeating Michigan, 5-2, in Ann Arbor Saturday afternoon.
The 11th-ranked Wildcats improved to 8-1 overall for the spring campaign, while the Wolverines fell to 4-2. The match was the Big Ten opener for both teams.
NU gained a 1-0 advantage by taking two of the three doubles matches to start the day. In singles, the Wildcats swept the second through fifth spots to clinch the victory. Lia Jackson and Marine Piriou were straight-set winners at 4 and 5, respectively, while Shannon Duffy overcame a first-set loss to win in three sets at No. 2. Colleen Cheng was on the verge of victory at No. 3, leading 6-2, 5-1 when her opponent was forced to stop play.
Northwestern is back in action Sunday afternoon, meeting Michigan State in East Lansing.
