EVANSTON, Ill. - In a match that was tightly contested throughout, the Northwestern men's tennis team fell to Indiana, 4-3, in a Big Ten match in Bloomington.
The loss dropped the Wildcats to 3-4 (0-2 Big Ten), while IU remained unbeaten on the spring at 4-0 (1-0 Big Ten).
Indiana got what would prove to be the deciding point in doubles, taking two of three matches to gain the first point. No. 2 doubles was extended beyond the normal eight-game pro set before IU's tandem of Milan Rukvica and Rahman Smiley defeated Northwestern's Jamie Sahara and Josh Axler, 9-7.
In singles, four of the six matches went the distance, with Northwestern winning two and Indiana winning two. Brad Erickson and Joost Hol were three-set winners in the first and second spots, while Russell Bennett won in straight sets at No. 6.
NU will meet Purdue Sunday afternoon in another Big Ten match in West Lafayette, Ind.
