EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern University baseball team fell for the second straight game at the Rawlings Spring Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. The Wildcats dropped a 7-4 decision to Creighton.
NU looked good early, scoring a run in each of the first four innings before the Jays' pitching was able to shut down the Wildcat bats. Creighton scored once in the first inning and twice in the fourth, then took the lead and blew the game open with four runs in the seventh inning.
For the second straight game, freshman Christopher Spiering suffered the loss. Coming on in relief of starter Zach Schara, who went six innings and allowed three runs, Spiering gave up three runs on three hits without recording an out. Michael Nall closed out, replacing Spiering and giving up a run in two innings on the hill.
Offensively, the Wildcats were led by leadoff hitter Jeremy Kurella. The junior shortstop had three hits and two RBI and added a stolen base. Bob Dainton also had three hits for NU, who recorded nine hits on the night.
NU will play Portland on Saturday night, then close out the tournament with a 1 p.m. Sunday game against Washington.
