EVANSTON, Ill. - The 18th-ranked Northwestern women's tennis team ran into a buzzsaw Thursday night in No. 7 Duke, and the result was a 6-2 loss to the Blue Devils in the first round of the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (USTA/ITA) Women's National Indoor Team Tennis Championships.
The loss was the Wildcats' first for the 2000 spring campaign, while Duke improved to 5-1. The Blue Devils will move on to play California in a quarterfinal match. NU will play a consolation match against a team to be determined.
Duke earned two points instead of one for sweeping the doubles matches, as the tournament is utilizing a unique scoring system. In singles, Northwestern got its only wins in the No. 4 and 5 spots from Lia Jackson (over Hillary Adams 6-4, 6-3) and Marine Piriou (over 66th-ranked Brooke Siebel 7-5, 6-4).
the unique scoring system also employed the use of only a tiebreaker if players split the first two sets. Two matches went to the tiebreaker, and both times Duke came out on top.
