EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern fencing coach Laurie Schiller won his 700th career match at the Detroit Mercy Duals in Detroit, Michigan. His squad helped him reach that plateau by going 4-0 for the weekend. The Wildcats defeated Michigan State, 24-3, in their first match for number 700 and followed it up with wins over Michigan (23-4), Wayne State (21-6) and Detroit Mercy (23-4).
Schiller entered the season with a 671-370 overall record, and the Wildcats have fenced their way to a 32-1 record and the No. 2 national ranking. He now stands at 703-371 and has coached 86 percent of the matches in school history (1,074-1,254). That stretch includes 16 seasons as the men's head coach prior to that program's move to club status following the 1993-94 season.
As the women's coach, Schiller has compiled a 446-195 career record, finishing with winning records in 21 of his 22 seasons.
The fencers will compete in the United States Fencing Association (USFA) Junior Olympics in Sacramento, Calif.
