Evanston, Ill. - Northwestern women's fencing coach Laurie Schiller announced the signing of Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne N.J./Wayne Valley) to a National Letter of Intent. Van Gieson will join the Wildcats' sabre squad for the 2001-02 season. Van Gieson has competed in both foil and sabre and is currently the 24th-ranked junior nationally in sabre.

Coach Schiller is pleased with the signing, as he will be graduating a good portion of a sabre team that finished 33-3 in dual competition last season and is currently 4-1 this season.

"Lauren should see immediate action in NCAA competition when she arrives at Northwestern next year," said Schiller. "She will help us fill some holes that will be left by graduation."
