Women's Swimming Splits Meet at Arizona State

Evanston - The Northwestern Women's Swimming team split their double dual meet against No. 19 Arizona State and Washington Saturday afternoon at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, Arizona. NU fell to ASU 111-153, while defeating WU 173-89.
It was a youth movement by the `Cats as eight freshman finished in the top three of their events, taking home three first place finishes, four second places and six third places. NU continued to excel in the distance events as they have all season and placed a swimmer within the top three of every event.
Vicky West (Redlands, Calif./Redlands) led the Wildcats with first place finishes in the 1000 (10.02.49) and 500 (4:56.37) freestyle. Both performances were top times for NU this season. Erica Rose (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken) followed-up West in the 1000 freestyle and improved her season top time to 10:07.15.
Katie Simmons ( Carmel, Ind./Carmel)took home top honors in the 200 breaststroke with a NCAA B standard qualifying time of 2:17.65. Simmons then placed second in the 100 breaststroke, coming up .32 seconds short of ASU's Riley Mants. She also added a third place finish in the 200 IM.
After further review, the timing system was found to have failed during the 200 medley relay, thus causing the race to be thrown out. Only 13 of the 14 events counted in the meet. The review erased what would have been a disappointing fifth place finish by NU in the relay.
The Wildcats will return home from their winter training trip on December 23rd. They are next in action on January 13th when they travel to Knoxville Tenn. to take on Tennessee and Auburn. They will face Tennessee at 11 a.m. and Auburn later in the evening at 6 p.m.
