A LOOK AT THE 'CATS:
Northwestern enters the weekend with an 0-16-1 overall record and an 0-6-0 mark in the Big Ten. The `Cats are coming off a one-goal loss (2-1) last weekend at the hands of Wisconsin. In 17 games this season, NU has lost 10 games by one goal, including two double-overtime, 2-1 home losses (to Oral Roberts and Michigan). The Wildcats' lone tie came against Lewis University, when the game was called after the first overtime due to darkness.

HEAD COACH MICHAEL KUNERT:
Michael Kunert is in his 19th season as head coach of the Wildcats. Last year, he guided NU to its first ever Big Ten Tournament win and its highest seeding to date (fourth). In his 19 years overseeing the Wildcats, Kunert has compiled a 110-208-30 overall record. In conference play since 1991, Kunert is 4-47 and he has a 1-9 tournament record.

SCORING THREAT:
Senior Jun Kim has scored six goals this season and is currently 10th on the Big Ten's scoring list. He sits at No. 8 on the Big Ten goals scored list. Kim is also ninth on NU's career goals list with 15. With one more goal, Kim will be tied with Jason Alexander and Bob Gaddis in eighth place. This season, Kim moved ahead of Alexander (36 pts.) into eighth on the career points list with 39 (15 goals, 7 assists).

STARTING FRESH:
Several of NU's younger players are making big contributions this season. Freshman Ian Herrick has scored two goals and tallied one assist and is second on the team in scoring (5 pts.). He is also 30th in conference scoring. Herrick has started 10 matches while playing in all 17 contests. Matt Miclea has also seen significant playing time, starting 13 of NU's 17 matches and scoring one goal. He also leads the team in shots on goal (26). Adding to the list, freshman Michael Trudell hasn't started any matches but has kicked it around in 15 this year, recording one assist.

HELPING HAND:
Seven players have tallied at least one assist this season, led by Paul Elkins, Paul Van Huysen and David DeHorn with three apiece. That's good for 12th in the conference assist totals. Steven Jedlinski has chipped in two assists, while Grant Trimble, Trudell and Herrick each have one.

NORTHWESTERN IN THE BIG TEN TOURNAMENT:
The Wildcats are 1-9-0 in Big Ten Tournament play. Last year, the `Cats defeated sixth-seeded Wisconsin, 2-0, in first-round action before falling to top-seeded and eventual Big Ten and national champion Indiana, 2-0.

'CATS vs. SPARTANS:
Northwestern and Michigan State hooked up Oct. 1 in East Lansing, Mich., and the Spartans came away with a 6-2 win. The two teams met once in 1999, with NU winning 1-0 in Evanston last November, 3.

POWERFUL COMPETITION:
NU has faced some tough competition this season. Three of their Big Ten opponents are ranked in the top 25 in this week's NSCAA/adidas national poll. Big Ten champ Indiana is No. 9, Ohio State is No. 19, and Penn State is No. 22.
