Northwestern Wrestling Goes 2-1 at Desert Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. -
The Northwestern wrestling team opened its 2000-2001 dual season 2-1 at the Duals in the Desert in Tempe, Ariz. Northwestern finished runner-up in the round-robin dual competition, defeating Minnesota-Morris 37-6 and Embry-Riddle 28-15, before falling to ASU in the final match of the day, 41-0.
Facing Minnesota-Morris in round one, UM's only points came on a decision by forfeit in the 197-pound weight class. Three Northwestern freshmen earned their first collegiate wins in the bout. Paul Augle major decisioned Darin Mathis, 11-1, Josh Ballard decisioned Joel Fugleberg, 8-5, and Michael Little major decisioned Jeff Stewart, 10-2.
In round two, NU was pitted against Embry-Riddle and came away with the 28-15 win. Robert Potashnick and Ryan Cumbee came away with wins each earning their first pins of the young season.
In the championship round NU faced No. 10 Arizona State and fell to the Sun Devils 41-0.
Northwestern is next in action when they host Central Michigan at Welsh-Ryan Arena in a dual match Dec. 16 at 2 p.m.
