EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern University men's basketball team used an 18-2 run in the first half and a 14-6 run in the second half to defeat the University of Vermont, 64-42, on Saturday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Sophomore Winston Blake (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) once again led the way offensively for the Wildcats, with 15 points. Freshman Ed McCants (Marion, Ohio/Marion Catholic) added 12 points off the bench, and made four of six shots from behind the arc. As a team, Northwestern committed just eight turnovers -- matching its season low for all of last year -- and had 19 assists on its 21 field goals.
At the other end, the Wildcat defense held the Catamounts in check by limiting them to 34 percent shooting from the field (15-44) and forcing 15 turnovers. Northwestern also controlled the battle of the boards, outrebounding Vermont, 37-29.
Vermont was led by senior Tony Orciari, with 21 points.
Northwestern now hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Clemson for a meeting with the Tigers as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Wildcats and Tigers will meet at 6:30 p.m. central in a game that will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
