EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's soccer team dropped its 15th game of the season, taking Michigan deep into double overtime before falling, 2-1. With just two minutes left on the clock in the second overtime, Michigan's Ryan Yoder fired a loose ball into the Wildcat net. Yoder's shot was the third attempt in a flurry of Wolverine shots on goal.
Northwestern started the scoring in the 40th minute when Dan Doman (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) chipped in a free ball from 10 yards in front of the net. NU held the 1-0 lead until Will Purdy slipped in a rebound off a direct kick past goalkeeper Chris Berlin (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette). Berlin ended the game with five saves, upping his season total to 82.
The game remained tied at 1-1 for the next 44 minutes as both teams increased the offensive pressure. Both Northwestern and Michigan had numerous chances to end the game. Northwestern's Brandon Swalve (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) hit the crossbar in the first overtime on a free kick just outside the Wolverine box, and then Michigan's Robert Turpin redirected a crossing pass at the end of regulation that just missed left by a couple feet.
Northwestern falls to 0-15-1 overall and 0-5 in the Big Ten, while Michigan earned its first Big Ten victory in its inaugural season as a varsity program. The Wolverines improved their record to 6-8-0 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
