EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern field hockey team won its fifth game of the year, defeating Southwest Missouri State by a score of 2-0 Sunday afternoon in Evanston, Ill.
On a cold and windy day at Lakeside Field, Northwestern used aggressive defensive play to record its second shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Jessica Yates (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) tallied four saves, upping her season total to 111.
After a scoreless first half that saw Southwest Missouri State outshoot the Wildcats 2-1, Northwestern posted its first goal when Nicole Smith (Warnbro, Western Australia/Como Senior) dove for a loose ball in front of the net and fired it past the outstretched SW Missouri State goalkeeper.
With the momentum still on Missouri State's side, Lindsey Millard (St. Louis Mo./St. Louis Country Day) tapped in a Wendy Roberts (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) rebound with 4:40 left in regulation to kill the Bears' rally. SMS's goalkeeper, Monnie Elzy, stopped both Smith's penalty corner shot and Roberts' rebound before Millard was able to capitalize and put the game out of reach.
Northwestern improves to 5-10 on the season, while Southwest Missouri State falls to 8-8.
