The Northwestern women's golf program took a giant step forward this season as, for the first time in the program's seven-year history, the Wildcats were represented in NCAA postseason competition. Freshman Emily Gilley earned an at-large berth to the NCAA East Regional, where she tied for 60th place out of 102 golfers.

Gilley ended her freshman campaign with a stroke average of 78.94, the best-ever recorded by a Wildcat freshman and the third-best overall average in school history. In addition, Gilley wrapped up an excellent first season with nine top-20 finishes in 12 events, including five top-10 showings. She became just the second Wildcat ever to be named All-Big Ten and also earned a spot on the Golfweek all-district team.

Sophomore Christie Hermes and junior Karen England also posted excellent seasons for the Wildcats as they recorded the eighth- and ninth-best stroke averages, respectively, in NU history. Hermes also tied the Northwestern single-round record by firing a 71 at the Big Ten-Big 12 Shootout on Oct. 12.

As a team, NU finished in third place at five of 12 events and also recorded two fourth-place finishes. The Wildcats took sixth place at the 1999 Big Ten Championships, marking the third time in the last four seasons that NU has finished in the upper division of the conference.
