Women's Fencing Competes at North American Cup

EVANSTON, Ill. - Members of Northwestern's women's fencing team kicked off 1999 competition at the USFA North American Cup in Louisville, Ky., on Jan. 15-18.

Sophomore Carly Wells (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) and freshman Kristen Dorf (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) were the team's top two finishers in open competition, finishing 39th (of 51) in sabre and 54th (of 114) in foil, respectively. NU assistant coach Edward Kaihatsu finished 38th (of 177) in open men's foil, while 1998 NU alum Michelle Schaffner was 35th (of 129) in open women's epe.

Northwestern sported top-half finishers in all three junior (under 20) events. Freshman Jennifer Greenebaum (Mendham, N.J./Pingrey School) was 23rd (of 61) in epe, Dorf was 19th (of 53) in foil and Wells was 15th (of 32) in sabre.
