EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern women's fencing coach Laurie Schiller was named National Collegiate Coach of the Year today by the U.S. Fencing Coaches Association. The award comes on the heels of Schiller leading the fencing team to its fifth 20-win season in the last six years. The team also finished second at this year's midwest team championships and 20th at the NCAA Championships.
The USFCA award is the only national collegiate fencing coaching award. Coaches considered for the honor must be nominated by their colleagues. Schiller's selection was based on the program's accomplishments during the 1997-98 regular season and at the NCAA Championships. The USFCA also determines the recipient based on the overall quality and success of the program, as well as the coach's "hard work and dedication to the sport of fencing."
Having just completed his 20th season as the Wildcats' head women's fencing coach, Schiller's teams have recorded a 390-189 (.674) overall mark, including 19 winning seasons.
