Women Swimmers Outlast Golden Gophers

EVANSTON, Ill. - The 12th-ranked Northwestern womens swimming and diving team (4-2, 3-1 Big Ten) won the 400 freestyle relay, the evenings final event, in thrilling fashion to defeat No. 13 Minnesota, 154-146.

Junior Amy Balcerzak (Sharon, Pa./The Peddie School) continued her terrific season by winning all three individual races she participated in, including the 200 breaststroke in a Norris Aquatic Center record time of 2:15.22. Balcerzak was also victorious in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.67) and the 200 individual medley (season-best 2:03.69), helping the Wildcats to victories in 11 of the 14 swimming events. Fellow junior Courtney Allen (Monument, Colo./Air Academy) won both sprints (50 and 100 freestyle) while freshman Hyun Soo Suh (Seoul, Korea/The Bolles School) won both distance races (500 and 1000 freestyle). Sophomore Tashy Bohm (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) added victories in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events.

Northwestern hits the road for a meet tomorrow, Jan. 23, at Purdue at 1 p.m.
