Summary: Wisconsin forward Adam Kowalski (South Bend, Ind./Clay) scored midway through the second half to give the Badgers the lead, and freshman midfielder Salil Kenkre (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cuerva) tallied an insurance goal on a direct kick just seven minutes later giving Wisconsin a 2-0 victory over Michigan State in the first round of the Big Ten Championship. UW moves on to face top-seeded and second-ranked Indiana in Saturdays semifinals.
"We came in not expecting too much," said Wisconsin head coach Kalekeni Mtalika Banda. "We just tried to extend the season one more game. Tomorrow well get a chance to play probably the best team in the nation."
After a scoreless first half, Kowalski gave the Badgers the lead on a beautiful goal from the right side, trapping the ball with his chest then firing it into the right side of the net. Michigan State had a couple of golden opportunities in the second half but could not capitalize. Spartan senior Chris Slosar (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) hit the post, and a shot by junior Brady Demling (St. Louis, Mo./St. Charles) was saved by Kenkre on the goalline. It is Wisconsins second victory over the Spartans this month.
"We work and we work and we work. We feel like were snakebitten or something," said Michigan State head coach Joe Baum.
