EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern Wildcat football team completed their spring practice today with a two-hour scrimmage. Head coach Randy Walker and his staff worked their team through 15 practices during the month of April and came away optimistic about the fall season.
Highlighting the last scrimmage was the improving play of the running backs. Damien Anderson, Kevin Lawrence and Brian Marshall combined for 221 yards on the ground. Sophomore wide receiver Sam Simmons continued his stellar play with two catches for 58 yards and a seven-yard touchdown reception from Gavin Hoffman.
The NU defense registered eight sacks and an interception by junior linebacker Napoleon Harris. The Wildcat linebacking corp of Harris, Conrad Emmerich, and Kevin Bentley looks to be a strength and one of the deepest positions on the team. Also on defense, senior defensive tackle Jeff Dyra had maybe the best spring of any Wildcat, dominating the interior defensive line.
The Wildcats open the 1999 schedule on September 4 at Ryan Field against Miami of Ohio.
