EVANSTON, Ill. - Junior midfielder Erica Westrich (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) and senior defender Kristen Palmer (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) have received All-America honors from Soccer Buzz, a soccer Web magazine. Westrich was named to the magazine's third team, while Palmer was an honorable mention all-American. The magazine named both Westrich and Palmer to its All-Great Lakes Region First Team, while Northwestern sophomore forward Brooke Bell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) was named to the third team.
Westrich, a center midfielder, this season became the first Northwestern soccer play ever to be named Big Ten Player of the Year. She became only the fifth women's soccer player to become an all-Big Ten selection three consecutive seasons. Westrich had three goals and one assist during the 1998 season, during which the 16-5-1 Wildcats reached the round of 16 of the NCAA tournament.
Palmer led Northwestern in scoring in 1998, scoring five goals and 11 assists. She was a first-team all-Big Ten selection and, with Westrich, a second-team Great Lakes Region selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Bell, a first-year starter for the Wildcats, was third for NU in scoring in 1998, notching seven goals and four assists.
