EVANSTON, Ill. - Amid the Northwestern womens fencing teams 9-0 weekend was one particularly meaningful victory for head coach Laurie Schiller. The teams fourth win, 23-9 over Wellesley College at the Wellesley College Fencing Invitational, was the 400th womens fencing victory of Schillers coaching career. Schiller has built a 405-192 womens record in 21 years at NU. He owns a 663-368 overall varsity mark.

Schiller, who coaches NUs mens club fencing team in addition to the womens varsity squad, was selected USFA National Collegiate Coach of the Year and Midwest Fencing Coach of the Year last season. His womens squad finished the year ranked No. 12 in the nation. After two weekends of action in 1999, the team sports a 15-3 overall mark, having already defeated five teams ranked among last seasons final top 20.

Northwestern earned four wins over Cornell, Vassar, Tufts, and Wellesley at the Wellesley Invitational Jan. 30. The next day the team avenged its NU Duals to North Carolina with a decisive 22-10 win to open action at the MIT Invitational. The Wildcats also defeated Brandeis, Brown, Boston College and NYU to round out the 5-0 day.

Individually, freshman Kristen Dorf (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) is tops among NU foilists with a 54-7 record. Freshman Jen Greenebaum (Mendham, N.J./Pingrey School) is the leading epeist, with a 50-10 record, and sophomore Carly Wells (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) is tops in the sabre, being fenced as an exhibition weapon for the final year, with an 8-0 mark.
