Men's Tennis Ousts Penn State in First Round

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 7 seed Northwestern men's tennis team defeated 10th-seeded Penn State, 4-1, in today's first round of the 1999 Big Ten Championships, held at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.
NU gained the early lead by winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots in the lineup. The Wildcats' top doubles team of senior Doug Bohaboy (Palo Alto, Calif.) and sophomore Brad Erickson (Eugene, Ore.) dominated Eric Meditz and Marc Dorfman by an 8-3 score. Junior Martin Bengtsson (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore Derrick Nguyen (Darnestown, Md.) beat Mike Griesser and Marc McCallister 8-6 at the No. 3 slot to clinch the team point for Northwestern (the No. 2 doubles match was abandoned).
The Wildcats (10-11, 4-6 Big Ten) continued their domination in the singles bracket as they earned victories in three of four singles matches for the overall win. Nguyen downed Eric Meditz (6-3, 7-5) at the No. 3 spot. NU closed out the match with convincing victories at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions. Freshman Joost Hol (Santa Ana, Calif.) defeated Jeff Martini (6-3, 6-2), while Erickson downed Marc McCallister (6-4, 6-1).
The victory advanced Northwestern to the quarterfinals where it will face second-seeded Michigan tomorrow at 9 a.m. EDT. The Wildcats are ranked No. 39 in the country, while the Wolverines are ranked No. 30.
