MADISON, Wisc. - A goal by junior forward Erica Westrich (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) pulled Northwestern to within one of Wisconsin for 31 minutes in the second half, but two late goals allowed the Badgers to pull away with a 5-2 win. The loss is the Wildcats' second in a row following a nine-game winning streak, as the team continues to plow through a brutal Big Ten schedule.
Northwestern dominated this evening's match for the first twenty minutes, coming close to scoring on several attempts and holding UW shotless until a few minutes before the Badgers countered with two quick goals from midfielder Maria DeGiovanni. In the second half, it was DeGiovanni's back save that prevented senior forward Lisa Byington (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) from tying the game in the 66th minute with a shot that beat UW keeper Briget Schwarting.
Westrich's goal came off a breakaway as the forward dribbled past an early keeper challenge and scored into an empty net. NU's first half goal from senior defender Kristen Palmer (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) came off a free kick, and was her fourth of the season.
