EVANSTON, Ill - Michigan converted three penalty corners, including two in the second half by forward Amy Philbrook, as the ninth-ranked Wolverines notched a 3-2, come-from-behind win at Northwestern on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats opened a 2-0 lead midway through the first period. Senior forward Wendy DeFord (Chula Vista, Calif./Hilltop) tallied her third goal of the season at the 19:31 mark. Wildcat sophomore forward Lindsay Wright (St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada/Ridley College) found the back of the cage five minutes later for her second goal of the season and a 2-0 NU lead. Michigan inched closer just one minute later as Kelli Gannon knocked in a penalty corner for a 2-1 halftime score.
The Wolverines had eight of their 11 penalty corners come in the second period, with Philbrook converting two of those into goals, the game-winner coming with 14:24 left in the game. Wildcat goalie Jess Yates made nine saves in the loss. Next match Friday, October 9, at Iowa, 4 p.m. CDT.
