Field Hockey Falls to Top-Ranked Virginia, 3-1

ST. LOUIS - Virginia used three second half goals to enable the top-ranked Cavaliers to edge out a 3-1 victory over the Wildcats on Monday afternoon at the Big Ten-ACC Challenge in St. Louis. Virginia is now 2-0 on the year while NU falls to 1-1.

The 'Cats hung tough in the opening half, tied 0-0 at intermission. Goalkeeper Jess Yates was spectacular, recording eight saves in the first 35 minutes to keep the Cavaliers off the scoreboard. The Wildcats scored first as, with 13:52 left in the opening period, St. Louis native Jodie Condie scored on an assist from Amy Haase. Virginia got on the board with 29:04 remaining in the game to tie the game at 1-1, and took the lead for good six minutes later.

Virginia outshot NU, 20-7, and had 16 penalty corners to NU's three. In goal, Yates ended the game with 10 saves overall.

The Wildcats return to Evanston for the home opener this Thursday. NU faces Kent State on Sept. 10 (4 p.m.), followed by Miami, Ohio on Sept. 11 (1 p.m.) and Dartmouth on Sept. 14 (1 p.m.).
