Field Hockey Falls to Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford used two early goals in both the first and second halves as the Cardinal knocked off 18th-ranked Northwestern, 4-3. Stanford improves to 4-2 overall while NU falls to 3-3.

With Stanford up 2-0 late in the first half, the 'Cats got on the board twice inside the final minute to knot the contest at 2-2 at halftime. Wendy DeFord tallied a goal with 49 seconds remaining and Shanel Gohsler found the back of the cage as time expired. Stanford reclaimed the lead at 4-2 with two tallies in the first 12 minutes of the second period, the final Cardinal goal coming on a penalty stroke with 22:57 left in the half. Amy Haase answered with a goal for NU with 20:15 left in the half, but Stanford held on for the 4-3 lead. Junior goalkeeper Jess Yates made four saves in the loss.

The Wildcats face California on Saturday afternoon followed by a Sunday matchup versus Pacific.
