IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Senior forward Wendy DeFord (Chula Vista, Calif./Hilltop) spun around a defender and scored with just under three minutes left to lift the Northwestern field hockey team to a 3-2 victory at Iowa on Friday afternoon. The win was the 300th in Northwestern field hockey history and makes NU only the third Big Ten school to reach that plateau, joining Iowa and Penn State. The Cats now have an all-time record of 300-138-28 (.674).
NU opened the match with a 2-0 lead at intermission, thanks to goals by senior Annie Scuilli (Short Hills, N.J./Oak Knoll) and sophomore Lindsay Wright (St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada). Iowa fought back to tie the game with eight minutes remaining, but DeFord notched the victory for the Wildcats shortly thereafter. Wildcat junior goalie Jess Yates (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) stopped 10 shots in the victory.
NEXT NORTHWESTERN MATCH: Fri., Oct. 16, vs. #8 Ohio State. 4 p.m. CT. Lakeside Field.
