10th-Ranked Wildcats Split in Season Opener

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern opened the 1998-99 women's swimming and diving campaign with a split in a double dual meet with conference foes Illinois and No. 7 Michigan. The 10th-ranked Wildcats defeated Illinois, 191-109, but dropped a 168-131 decision to the Wolverines.

Junior Amy Balcerzak (Sharon, Pa./The Peddie School) took first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.89 while senior Cathy Lundin (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee) captured first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.57.

Freshman Hun Soo Suh (1000-yard freestyle; 10:11.28) and classmate Merritt Adams (200-yard butterfly; 2:05.26) also captured first place finishes in their first collegiate meet.

The team of Balcerzak, Lundin and juniors Dominique Diezi (Zurich, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Stadelhofen) and Courtney Allen (Monument, Colo./Air Academy) was also victorious, capturing the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:47.92.

Northwestern swims again at home tomorrow at noon, playing host to eight other schools in the NU Relays
