Women's Swimming Signs Six to Letters of Intent

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University women?s swimming coach Jimmy Tierney announced the signing of six athletes to National Letters of Intent. These women will begin competing for the Wildcats ? currently ranked 11th in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) national poll ? in the fall of 2000:
Nicole Bernard (Seattle, Wash./Blanchet HS) is a high school All-American who is a junior national champion in the 1,500-meter freestyle and a U.S. national finalist in both the 400-meter and 800-meter free. She boasts times of 1:57.25 in the 200-yard free, 4:49.55 in the 500-yard free, and 16:26.71 in the 1,650-yard free. Nicole also swims for the Shilshore Aquatic club.
Stephanie Cranston (Ballwin, Mo./Mary Institute) is a U.S. Swimming Scholastic All-American who is a junior national champion in the 400-yard individual medley (4:23.00). She also boasts times of 1:51.76 in the 200-yard free, 4:54.54 in the 500-yard free and 10:00.91 in the 1,000-yard free. Stephanie also swims for the Rockwood Aquatics club.
Erica Rose (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/The Hawkin School) is the world champion in the open water 5-kilometer swim and finished third at the U.S. Nationals in the 1,500-meter freestyle. Her times include 4:50.86 for 500-yard freestyle, 9:51.00 for 1,000-yard free, 16:23.00 for 1,650-yard free, and 4:22.50 for the 400-yard IM. Erica is a high school and U.S. Swimming Scholastic All-American and also swims for the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins club.
Katie Simmons (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) is a high school All-American who was a finalist at the U.S. Nationals in the 200-meter breaststroke. Her times include 1:03.58 for 100-yard breast, 2:16.72 for 200-yard breast, 2:21.94 for 200-meter IM and 4:55.77 for 400-meter IM. Katie also swims for the Carmel Swim Club.
Erin Swenson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central HS) is a junior national champion in the 200-yard freestyle. Her times include 51.92 for 100-yard free, 1:51.36 for 200-yard free and 1:02.73 for 100-meter butterfly. Erin also swims for the Clayton Shaw Park Swim Team.
Vicky West (Redlands, Calif./Redlands HS) is a high school and U.S. Swimming Scholastic All-American and junior national champion in the 200 IM, the 400 free and the 800 free. Her times include 1:50.77 in the 200-yard free, 4:18.86 in the 400-meter free, 8:48.70 in the 800-meter free and 16:36.02 in the 1,650-yard free. Vicky also swims for the Redlands Swim Team.
